Summary: Neon Genesis Evangelion looks, on the outside, to be a simple anime about big robots called Evas fighting against enemies called Angels. And these Evas can only be piloted by children, generally adolescents around the age of 15. But Evangelion is much deeper than that. It is the story of a boy named Shinji Ikari as he comes to terms with the many facets of himself - his identity, his self-love/self-pity, his relationship with his father, etc. Beyond that, it is a philosophical journey into the world of science and man as playing god. It is hard to describe too much about this series without giving it away, but the basic storyline leaves out some of the most important elements of this anime.
Commentary: In Gilles Poitras' book Anime Essentials: Everything a Fan Needs to Know, the author refers to this series as the greatest anime ever made. So, of course, I had to check it out. I can certainly see why it is regarded so highly. As I said in the summary, there is much more to this series than meets the eye. It is a deep philosophical analysis. If you loved FLCL (also by Gainax), you'll love to see an earlier work of theirs. You can definitely see the roots of FLCL in this work. Watch this anime - all the way through! Don't just watch an episode or two to decide what you think, because the beginning is rather straightforward - angels bad, evas good, lots of battling. But the farther you get into the series, the deeper you go into the lives and minds of these characters. If you love anime, watch Neon Genesis Evangelion.
