Summary: Miaka Yuki wants nothing more than to get into a good high school and make her mother happy. When she and friend Yui stumble upon an old book, The Universe of the Four Gods, and are pulled into the story, Miaka is delighted to find out that if she were to become the Priestess of Suzuka and collect the seven warriors, she can have any wish she wants. She can now wish to pass the entrance exam for the high school of her choice. Unfortunately, nothing remains simple for long, as Miaka must deal with heartache and betrayal.

Commentary: I had heard of Fushigi Yugi, but knew nothing about it. So when I picked it up and read it one day I had no idea what to expect. I immediately was pulled into the story and have never felt so involved in something before. I felt that I really understood the characters and could identify with them. I love the art as well - I know some people say they do not like Yu Watase's style, but I think it's great. This is one of those stories that you just cannot put down. I think it qualifies as shojo (for girls), but I think if a guy were to pick this up and read it without any preconceptions, he would probably enjoy it. Of course, I haven't been able to get any guys I know to even try this one, so though I would recommend it for either guys or girls, I'd say good luck getting a guy to read it.
