Summary: The final angel is dead, and Azuka and Shinji have both sunk into madness. However, NERV is not finished with them yet. When an evil plot by the organization SEELE is uncovered, the pilots and Evas are needed. However, Rei cannot be found, and Azuka and Shinji can barely move, let alone pilot an Eva.
Commentary: I think this is a much better direction to take the series. We get to learn more about many of the characters and get a little more insight into what has been going on behind what we saw in the series. However, this version is still rather vague, ending suddenly and without much closure. Instead of watching this movie, go ahead and watch End of Evangelion - it contains all of Rebirth and then continues where Rebirth ends to give us a real ending.
